The Sunbury Downs College Scholars Program – Years 10-12

 


The Sunbury Downs College (SDC) Scholars program is suitable for academically talented students who have a demonstrated their passion and commitment to their learning throughout their Middle Years studies and wish to peruse an academic pathway after VCE.

The Program has been designed to develop and extend individual student strengths while presenting them with greater opportunities through the provision of wider curriculum offerings. The students who commit to the SDC Scholars Program will be offered:

  • VCE/VET support and guidance through the provision of a Scholars Program Home Group for the duration of their Later Years studies
  • Individual Success Plans (ISPs), which are tailored and reviewed on a term by term basis
  • Early VCE commencement options in Year 10
  • Exclusive workshops, excursions, seminars and incursions which focus on developing skills for VET/VCE and University success
  • Access to an Achievement Mentoring Program
  • Early University commencement options in Year 12 (if required)

2017 SDC Scholars Program Curriculum Structure

In 2017, the students in Scholars Program will:

  • Remain together as a Home Group for the duration of Year 10
  • Based on teacher recommendations and individual student interest and strengths, students will be able to participate in an early commencement VCE subject
  • Students strong in English will be recommended to complete Advanced Year 10 English, with Year 10 Literature as an elective
  • Students with strong Mathematical skills will be recommended to complete the Year 10 Pre-Methods Mathematical subject
  • Students who have been identified as being exceptionally strong academically, will be provided the opportunity to undertake up to two early commencement VCE/VET subjects
  • Students in the program will be strongly encouraged to strive towards the completion of the prestigious VCE Baccalaureate. The VCE Baccalaureate is an additional form of recognition for students who successfully meet the demands of studying a higher level mathematics and a language in their VCE program of study, thereby achieving breadth of study. To be eligible to receive the VCE Baccalaureate a student must satisfactorily complete the VCE and receive a study score for each prescribed study component. The VCE program of study must include:
    • A Units 3 and 4 sequence in English or Literature with a study score of 30 or above
    • A Units 3 and 4 sequence in either Mathematics Methods or Specialist Mathematics
    • A Units 3 and 4 sequence in a VCE Languages study
    • At least two other Units 3 and 4 sequences
    Students who achieve the VCE Baccalaureate will receive a VCE Baccalaureate certificate instead of a VCE Certificate. Their VCE Statement of Results will also indicate that they have met the requirements of the VCE Baccalaureate.

Entry Requirements:

  • Students who are already successful members of the Year 9 ACE Program will automatically be offered a place in the program
  • Students who are currently attending the College and have been identified as requiring academic extension, as identified through their semester reports, GPAs and classroom teachers may be offered a place in the program
  • External students who apply will be required to submit evidence of academic achievement and attend an interview at the College to determine their suitability for placement in the program

SDC Scholars Program Fees:

Please note, participants in the Scholars Program will be required to pay an additional fee to cover the various costs of the program.
