The Debating and Public Speaking Club had another COVID affected year this year, following on from last year’s abandoned competition. It was pleasing though that the debating competition did at least run for 3 of the scheduled 5 rounds.
While we were unable to field a senior team, but the Year 9 team was able to step up and took on the challenge.
The team of Prisha Maini, Ty Brunton, Baylee McKean and Yonatan Anshtein (all 9D) with Sahana Mani (7E) took on topics ranging from free public transport through to animal testing with aplomb. Supported by Debate Club Captain Aiko Gatti and Jesse Ramsay, the team developed a range of strong arguments, with Baylee and Yonatan earning Speaker of the Night Awards, and the team winning 2 of their 3 debates.
While a truncated competition, the team scores saw them coming in a credible 7th equal in their region (from 40 teams), and were the top scoring Government school, creating a strong foundation for next year’s competition.
Prisha Maini (9D) prepares to deliver her arguments as to why public transport should be not be free, watched on by team mates Sahana Maini (7E) and Ty Brunton (9D).
